Union vs. Non-Union Crew: When is the Experience Worth the Cost?

Hey everyone, I'm Miguel Santos, a drone operator, and I'm grappling with a common budget dilemma. I'm prepping for a short narrative film, a passion project with some commercial potential, so I'm trying to stretch every dollar. We're looking at shooting on an ALEXA Mini with some Forza 720B lights, so decent gear, but the crew budget is tight.

I’ve always valued experience, especially with more complex setups or when we're pushing boundaries with a V-RAPTOR XL. But now I'm faced with the classic choice: a more affordable non-union crew, or a union team with a proven track record. I’ve tried negotiating kit rentals down, and I'm pretty good at getting deals on my lenses and even an 833 for sound. But the labor cost difference is significant.

When you're really up against it, how do you decide where to draw the line? Is the potential for smoother operations and fewer reshoots with a union crew worth the higher upfront cost, or do you find that a well-vetted non-union team can deliver just as well for certain projects?
