Documentary Director, Mid-Level
Independent production seeking a passionate Documentary Director for an upcoming project based in New York City. This film will explore the untold stories of forgotten jazz musicians from the Harlem Renaissance era, aiming for a poignant, historically rich, and visually captivating tone that resonates with modern audiences. We're looking for someone who can bring a fresh perspective to historical narratives, blending archival footage with compelling present-day interviews. Key responsibilities include leading the creative vision, overseeing all stages of production from pre-production research to post-production, directing interviews and verité sequences, and collaborating closely with our small, dedicated team. You'll be responsible for translating our narrative goals into a powerful cinematic experience. Candidates should have a minimum of 3-5 years of experience directing documentary features or high-quality shorts. A strong reel showcasing your directorial style, storytelling ability, and experience with historical or character-driven narratives is essential. While we have basic production equipment, familiarity with industry-standard cameras and audio recording equipment is a plus. We are seeking a creative partner, so this is an equity partnership role, with compensation tied to the film's success. Expected shoot dates are flexible, targeting late summer or early fall 2024, approximately 4-6 weeks of principal photography spread out, plus prep and post. We're covering basic production expenses and logistics.
