Production Design for Documentary

Looking for a Production Designer for an upcoming independent documentary filming in late September 2026. This project explores the vibrant, often hidden, subcultures of New York City and needs a creative eye to help tell its story through authentic, lived-in visuals. We're aiming for a grittier, naturalistic tone, finding beauty in urban decay and real-world settings rather than staged environments. Key responsibilities include collaborating with the director on visual concepts, sourcing and modifying props, overseeing set dressing (primarily real locations), and managing art department logistics for about a 10-day shoot. You'll be working closely with a small, dedicated crew. This is an entry-level position, so enthusiasm and a willingness to learn are key. We're looking for someone with a strong visual aesthetic, organizational skills, and problem-solving abilities. A portfolio or examples of past visual work (even student projects or personal art) are a big plus. Experience with low-budget productions is helpful. Compensation is deferred, with a backend percentage offered. Shoot dates are approximately late September 2026 for around 10 days, with some prep needed before.
