Screenwriting for Documentary

Documentary Screenwriting New York, NY entry Budget: $2000-3000/week

Our independent production is looking for a talented entry-level Screenwriter to join our team for an upcoming documentary project based in New York City. This film will explore the untold stories of a vibrant cultural movement from the 1980s, combining archival footage with contemporary interviews to create a compelling and intimate narrative. We're aiming for a tone that is both nostalgic and insightful, with a touch of investigative journalism. Key responsibilities include collaborating with the director and research team to outline the film's structure, developing interview questions, crafting voice-over narration, and integrating historical context into a cohesive script. You'll be working closely on story development and ensuring a strong narrative flow from pre-production through the edit. We're seeking someone with a strong command of storytelling, excellent research skills, and an ability to translate complex information into an engaging documentary script. No specific gear is required for this role. While entry-level, please provide any relevant writing samples or a portfolio showcasing your narrative abilities, even if not specifically in documentary film. Prior experience in factual storytelling or journalism is a plus. This is a paid position offering $2000-3000 per week, depending on experience. We anticipate about 8-12 weeks of work, primarily in New York, NY, starting in mid September 2026. Hours will be standard full-time. We'll provide all necessary research materials and a collaborative, supportive working environment.
